The Director of Store Payroll and Strategic Analysis will lead activities that provide critical store performance and expense tracking, executive reporting and strategic analysis and forecasting and budgeting information for Stores at Ross and dd's Discounts. The Finance Director will interact frequently with the Group Vice President and Controller of Store Finance and the SVP and VPs of other stores functions (the Field, Corporate Finance, Operations and LP).

The Director will lead a team of 4 Associates in total and will have two direct reports (Manager and Senior Analyst).

  • Lead and supervise end to end P&L responsibility for all store labor expense and key strategic analysis
  • Lead and manage the payroll team to drive management of store labor expense and payroll process improvements. Supervise daily, weekly and monthly payroll activities including allocations, field and executive reporting, reconciliations and analyses. Proactively identify potential issues or challenges, provide explanations for spend and communicate to Executive Leadership
  • Analyze monthly, quarterly and yearly payroll variances to budget and formulate explanations of payroll spend for Finance. In addition, supervise the generation and submission of the quarterly board schedules. Be on point to drive analysis to answer board-related inquiries
  • Ensure store payroll budgets and 5 Year Plans created are based on sound assumptions, accurate, submitted timely and have been appropriately vetted and reviewed by relevant business partners (via creation of effective communication materials.). Collaborate with and provide guidance to the Store Labor Process Improvement team to capture payroll cost savings
  • Lead the store reporting and strategic analysis capability through complex analysis, report building and program management
  • Design and conduct financial and operational analysis to understand drivers of performance, diagnose causes of weak performance and identify root causes of changes in performance trends - examples include drill down sales analysis, macro-economic analysis, store operating metric analysis and cannibalization and competitive analysis
  • Structure, complete and supervise completion of various complex analyses to answer questions that arise around store performance, return on investment, operational issues and other topics. Prepare communication (written and oral) that effectively communicates the results and implications from the analysis to senior executive audiences
  • Lead the annual process to collect and prioritize requested changes to existing reports and requests for automation or creation of new reports. Work with IT and business users to help create report requirement and design documents and facilitate the review and approval of these documents
  • Manage all aspects of the Store Dashboard reporting capabilities to ensure it is aligned with field leadership focus and overall corporate goals. Drive implementation and change management of dashboard enhancements
  • Support the Store Operations team as needed to facilitate the rollout and change management processes for new and or changed reports. Proactively identify and initiate improvements to the reporting process
  • Lead the Ross and dd's motor fleet program, ensuring that the motor fleet process is efficient and effective and that risk management policies are implemented and adhered to
  • Oversee the portfolio of company cars to ensure that the fleet is efficient and cost effective. Provide recommendations for change as needed and drive the socialization process with Field leadership
  • Analyze program savings and work with vendor to identify opportunities for better results. Ensure savings are accurately reflected in forecast and budget
  • Oversee the ongoing management of vendors (e.g., SLAs, contract renewal)
  • Partner with tax, legal and HR partners as neededDevelop a high performing team. Coach and develop the team to maximize performance and value addition to the company while maintaining high morale

  • Bachelor's degree required with demonstrated superior college performance (preferably in an analytical field).
  • CPA or MBA preferred.
  • Minimum of 7 years post college experience with demonstrated success at increasing levels of responsibility
  • Strong familiarity with core financial planning and analysis processes including budgeting, forecasting and financial control process design
  • Outstanding analytical ability - must have a data driven approach to solving problems. Requires very strong quantitative skills, a good sense of how to dissect problems and a strong ability to "connect the dots" - e.g. understand how pieces of data interact with each other or how one finding should inform the result of another analysis
  • Track record of successful team development - managing a team to high levels of performance and developing team members for growth and advancement
  • A clear understanding of basic financial, statistical and economic concepts
  • Excellent communication skills - must be able to clearly communicate results and implications of analysis in both verbal and written (PowerPoint) forms
  • A detail-oriented approach: Must pay very close attention to details and have the drive to get things right
  • Relationship Building - needs to be able to build effective working relationships with a broad range of people within the Store Finance, Field, LP and senior executive teams
  • Strong fundamental business technical skills - must be Excel and PowerPoint proficient and have an ability to learn new business process software applications (Hyperion, DART, Flash Sales).
  • Must be trustworthy with confidential information
