Corporate Intern - Financial Planning & Analysis

GENERAL PURPOSE:

As a Corporate Intern at Ross you will have the opportunity to experience the world of off-price retail and be a part of a growing Fortune 500 company. This position is based in Dublin, California at our corporate headquarters. This internship prepares students for a potential career in retail, allowing you a real-world perspective on a career at Ross.

Interns will gain insight into the objectives of their department and the daily responsibilities of an analyst at Ross.

Within the corporate offices of Ross, we will host interns in a variety of departments including Human Resources, Store Operations, Strategy, Loss Prevention, and Finance.

The ideal Intern candidate for the Financial Planning and Analysis (“FP&A”) Department will have experience with:
  • Data analysis – Using strong Excel and database skills to compile, organize, and synthesize data
  • Financial modeling – Building models to project and analyze financial, operational and statistical data
  • General business acumen – A clear understanding of basic business, financial, statistical, and accounting concepts
  • Communication and business partnering - Strong written and verbal communication skills with a demonstrated history of succeeding in a team environment
The Financial Planning and Analysis intern will have an opportunity to work on projects focused within the department and Ross. Different parts of the company play a key role in executing our strategy (e.g. buying, merchandising, store operations); the role of the Financial Planning and Analysis department is unique in that it spans the full breadth of the business. The processes and deliverables we manage incorporate input from all parts of our company, providing Senior Management with a comprehensive understanding of our performance, our near and long term financial outlook, and our key success drivers and metrics.

The Financial Planning and Analysis team is data driven, process focused, and extremely detail oriented.We also leverage solid communication and “people skills” to achieve results.

Possible projects our intern will work on include:
  • FP&A Portal – Design a SharePoint site to house all 5 Year Plan, Budgeting, Forecasting, and Hyperion materials. Create training materials to educate our business partners on how to use the Portal. Define best practices for FP&A to communicate with the Company.
  • Hyperion Training Manuals – Redesign our on-boarding materials for our Hyperion Financial Planning software to help new users understand how to use the tool, the financial data available, and the types of analyses that can be performed.
  • Long Range Planning – Help to build a comprehensive, long range (10 year) financial plan to provide clarity on our operational and financial metrics as we continue to grow the business.
  • Financial Reporting – Using Hyperion Financial Planning software to build customized, automated financial reports to replace existing, Excel based manual reports.
INTERN PROGRAM OUTLINE:

The Ross Intern program is a 10-week full-time program (40 hours per week) for college level Juniors, starting in early June ending mid-August. The Intern Program will cover training on project related responsibilities, ownership of a department related project as well as exposure to senior leadership and other departments within Ross corporate.

The main component of the internship will be to analyze a business project within your department while participating in daily department activities. Interns will be expected to present a final project analysis and presentation to senior management and fellow interns.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SPECIAL SKILLS REQUIRED:
  • Must currently be enrolled in 4-year college degree program; must currently be in Junior standing with expected graduation between December 2019 and August 2020
  • MS Office with strong practical application of Excel skills
  • Ability to demonstrate use of PowerPoint skills
  • Strong analytical skills with spreadsheet applications
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Able to work in a fast paced environment
  • Excellent organizational skills and detail-oriented
  • Retail experience is a plus, but not necessary
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/ADA:
  • Requirements: Consistent timeliness and regular attendance. Job requires ability to work in an office environment, primarily on a computer. The job also requires sitting, standing, walking, talking on the telephone, attending in-person meetings, typing, and working with paper/files, etc.
  • Occasional Requirements: Job occasionally requires bending, kneeling, reaching, and lifting up to 10 pounds.
  • May also require occasional driving and/or traveling overnight for business functions or site visits.
  • Vision requirements: Ability to see information in print and/or electronically.
